United Nations Structure

Secretariat

Headed by the Secretary-General, the UN Secretariat carries out the substantive and administrative work of the UN as directed by the General Assembly, the Security Council and other organs. The Secretariat comprises a number of departments including the Department of Political Affairs, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. It also includes all Special and Personal Representatives or Envoys of the Secretary-General such as the Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict, and the Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa.
