Commonwealth Conversation – Summary of Wellington event

The Commonwealth’s future shape and mission came under scrutiny during a wide-ranging public forum recently held in Wellington as part of the global Commonwealth Conversation.

Launched in London in July the Commonwealth Conversation is described as “the largest global dialogue ever undertaken between the peoples of the Commonwealth about their association.”

The dialogue will contribute to the outcomes of this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Wellington event was one of two events held in New Zealand to feed into the Commonwealth Conversation.

Guest speakers gave their differing views on the usefulness, potential and future of the Commonwealth to the Wellington audience.

The audience then broke into smaller groups to consider topics such as: the future leadership of the Commonwealth, how the Commonwealth can support development and how the Commonwealth can contribute to debates on global issues.
