Following the 14th Round of the FTA negotiations, between the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Australia and New Zealand, the shape of a credible and commercially meaningful deal is beginning to emerge.
Held in Brisbane, from 21 - 26 of April, the main outcomes of the 14th round of FTA negotiations included further progress on all of the chapter texts of the agreement, including goods, services, investment, rules of origin, customs facilitation and intellectual property rights.
Shortly after the Brisbane round, the Minister of Trade, Hon Phil Goff, met with Australian and ASEAN counterparts on 3 May, in Bali, to discuss the way forward. In particular, Ministers endorsed a timeframe for the conclusion of negotiations by the end of August 2008.
The next round of negotiations will be held on Ha Noi from 2 - 7 June. This round is expected to enable negotiators to meet the end of August deadline set by the Ministers. At Ha Noi, negotiators will therefore look to progress the goods, investment and services texts as well as to substantively engage on market access for services and goods.
While negotiations are now in the closing phase, we continue to welcome contact from companies, especially those from which we have not yet heard.
