The 10th Round of New Zealand-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations took place in Beijing from 29 January - 3 February.
This round quickly followed the 14 January meeting between Prime Minister Helen Clark and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, held in the margins of the East Asia Summit in Cebu, the Philippines.
At Cebu, leaders reiterated their commitment to reaching a comprehensive, high-quality and balanced FTA before April 2008, and urged negotiators to conclude such an agreement as soon as possible within that timeframe.
Considerable work remains to achieve this outcome. Round 10 again covered the full range of issues New Zealand looks to include in such an agreement with further progress achieved in a number of areas of text of the agreement. With negotiations in a number of the technical areas of the agreement now well advanced, discussion is increasingly concentrating on respective market access commitments in goods, services and investment.
