New Zealand-China Free Trade Agreement

Twelfth Round Information Bulletin - June 2007

The Twelfth Round of New Zealand-China FTA negotiations was held in Beijing over 6-12 June.

The Round saw continued progress across the text of an agreement, with technical work across all areas now well advanced. Looking forward negotiators will be focusing on the remaining areas of substantive difference, including in respect of the market access negotiations on goods (and the accompanying rules of origin), and the scheduling of services and investment commitments.

For New Zealand, the key priority in such discussions is to secure high quality rules and commitments which provide for enhanced access and certainty for New Zealanders doing business in China.

A further round is scheduled to be held at the end of next month in Beijing. The increased regularity of meetings (the July meeting will be the fourth round of 2007), and corresponding intensification of negotiating effort, follows instructions from the leadership of both countries to conclude a comprehensive, high quality and balanced agreement as soon as possible by April 2008.
