The thirteenth and fourteenth rounds of New Zealand-China FTA negotiations were held in Beijing in recent months. The thirteenth round of negotiations was held from 21–27 July. The fourteenth round ran from August 28–31.
Further progress was made across the negotiations as a whole, including on outstanding issues such as goods market access and commitments in the areas of services and investment, although the detail of commitments in these areas remain to be resolved. For New Zealand, the key priority in such discussions is to secure high quality rules and commitments which provide for enhanced access and certainty for New Zealanders doing business in China.
The fourteenth round of negotiations was followed by bilateral meetings in Sydney during APEC. Prime Minister Clark met with President Hu and Minister of Trade Goff met with his counterpart, Commerce Minister Bo. The leadership of both countries reaffirmed their intention to conclude a comprehensive, high quality and balanced agreement as soon as possible by April 2008.
