New Zealand and Japan are establishing a joint Officials Group to examine ways to further develop our bilateral trade and investment relationship. New Zealand is keen to see the Officials Group advance the bilateral relationship and expects that the Officials Group process will provide both governments with information they need to decide whether to move to FTA negotiations in the future.
The second Japan New Zealand Officials Group meeting will be held in Wellington on 8 December 2009. The Group is mandated to examine ways to further develop the bilateral trade and economic relationship. This meeting will be the first following Prime Minister Key's meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Hatoyama in October 2009 in which they directed the Group to "deepen discussions in a constructive manner". Consultation with stakeholders is envisaged over the coming months.
Between November 2006 and March 2009 a Joint Working Group, consisting of officials from a range of government agencies, met six times to examine the New Zealand - Japan economic relationship. The Joint Working Group process has now concluded and on 3 March 2009 completed a report on the bilateral economic relationship. The report provides an overview of recent trends in bilateral trade and investment; assesses recent international and regional policy developments and their implications; identifies and describes existing issues and challenges and ways to address these; and identifies possible initiatives for bilateral cooperation.
