New Zealanders travelling in Europe need to be aware of the high incidence of petty crime in many European countries especially during the summer months. Foreign visitors are routinely targeted and many New Zealanders have reported their passports stolen as well as cash and other personal possessions.
Experienced criminals often work in organised groups and frequent tourist areas and major attractions. They use various techniques to distract their victims and steal their belongings frequently without their knowledge. Such crimes can occur at any time of the day or night.
New Zealand travellers should be vigilant at all times. They should ensure passports, travel documents and other personal belongings are secure. Travellers should also ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance.
If you are planning to travel to the United States under the visa waiver programme, see the US Embassy website [external link] for official information on the new travel authorisation requirements due to be introduced in January 2009.
There has been a recent upsurge in dengue fever cases in some parts of the South Pacific (Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, New Caledonia, Kiribati and Palau), Asia (Thailand) and in South America (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Dengue fever is a serious viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. As there is no vaccine to protect against dengue fever, travellers are advised to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and stay in lodgings where there are mosquito screens on windows and doors. If you feel unwell during your trip or in the first two weeks after your return, you are advised to seek immediate medical advice.

New Zealanders are advised to apply for their visa to China in the country they are ordinarily resident. (If you live in New Zealand, you should obtain your visa before you leave.)
