Lebanon

Reviewed: 2 July 2008, 14:37 NZDT
Still current at: 09 September 2008

There is extreme risk to your security in southern Lebanon (south of the Litani River) and we advise against all travel to this region due to the uncertain security situation and danger posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance.

There is extreme risk to your security in the Palestinian refuge camps and we advise against all visits to the camps. The security situation in the camps is unpredictable and violent clashes between the Lebanese authorities and militants continue to pose a significant risk to safety.

Elsewhere in Lebanon there is high risk to your security and we advise against all tourist and other non-essential travel due to the unpredictable security situation and a recent period of political unrest. Political agreement was reached on 21 May 2008 to elect a President and form a new unity government, ending several weeks of violent clashes between opposition and pro-government groups. Although levels of violence have decreased since then, tensions have flared up around Tripoli and parts of the Beka’a valley and further violence cannot be ruled out.

We recommend New Zealanders in Lebanon monitor the media and local developments closely and follow the advice of the local authorities. You should ensure your travel documents are kept up to date and are readily available at all times.

New Zealanders are advised to avoid all political demonstrations, rallies and large public gatherings as they could turn violent with little warning. If you are in an area affected by demonstrations or violence, you should find a safe location, remain indoors and heed any local advice.

The threat from terrorism in Lebanon is high and Western interests may be targeted. Political assassinations, car bombings and grenade attacks have taken place throughout Lebanon in the past few years and the security situation remains volatile. It is possible that New Zealanders may get caught up in violence directed at others.

New Zealanders currently travelling or resident in Lebanon should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies in place. You should check that your travel insurance policy covers travel to Lebanon.

New Zealanders travelling or resident in Lebanon are strongly encouraged to record/update their details online.
