New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta has held introductory calls with Samoa and Solomon Islands
Minister Mahuta acknowledged the strong relationship New Zealand had with Samoa in her conversation with Samoan Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi - a relationship which is underpinned by the Treaty of Friendship. They discussed respective COVID-19 responses, including plans for vaccine roll-out. Both shared their commitment to supporting regional unity through the Pacific Islands Forum and to continuing to work closely with Micronesian partners to address their concerns. Minister Mahuta thanked Prime Minister Tuilaepa for his support in mobilising Samoan Recognised Seasonal Employed workers, acknowledging their important contribution in New Zealand. Prime Minister Tuilaepa noted he would welcome a visit by Minister Mahuta to Samoa when circumstances allowed.
Minister Mahuta and Solomon Islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Hon Jeremiah Manele held a constructive and engaging conversation that reflected the whanaungatanga (kinship) that exists between the two countries. Ministers underscored their commitment to working together to progress economic development and social resilience in Solomon Islands and with partners to promote a stronger region. Minister Mahuta reiterated New Zealand’s offer to continue assisting Solomon Islands’ COVID-19 response and recovery, including through support for accessing and rolling out safe and effective vaccines.
