More than 100 classified diplomatic files covering the last 100 years are to be made public as part of a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade declassification programme.

Archives New Zealand is today releasing 144 previously restricted files, covering a range of topics.

This is the first release under the updated MFAT declassification programme, with subsequent regular releases to follow from next year.

The programme will see records 25 years and older systematically reviewed and declassified, subject to a stringent vetting process to ensure New Zealand’s interests are protected.

The original files will be available to access through Archives New Zealand.

They can be requested through Archives New Zealand’s Archway search tool at https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/(external link), and viewed at Archives House, 10 Mulgrave Street, Wellington.
