About Niue

Niue is situated in the South Pacific between Tonga, Samoa and Cook Islands. Its land area is 260km and its population is around 1,700.

Niue is self-governing in ‘free association’ with New Zealand. It is part of the Realm of New Zealand, which means that we share the same Head of State, His Majesty the King in Right of New Zealand.

New Zealand’s engagement prioritises empowering the Government of Niue, to ensure the people of Niue lead prosperous, healthy, and safe lives connected to culture, land, and community.

Trade

Niue's income from tourism has been growing, as air services have doubled to two flights a week, and more accommodation and other infrastructure is built.

Niue imports fuel and food to supplement its fishing and agriculture production, and this is reflected in trade flows with New Zealand (identified in table below).

Niue’s currency is the New Zealand dollar.

Development cooperation

Our goal is for an economically and socially prosperous Niue.

On 21 July 2022, the Governments of New Zealand and Niue signed a Statement of Partnership setting out the principles and priorities under which we will cooperate, coordinate and partner in shared priority areas.

  • 2019: Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs Fletcher Tabuteau led New Zealand’s delegation to Niue for High-Level Consultations
  • 2018: Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern led a delegation to Niue as part of the Pacific Mission
  • 2017: Prime Minister Bill English led a delegation to Niue as part of the Pacific Mission
  • 2017: Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy visited Niue on her first official overseas visit, and held the investiture for Premier Sir Toke Talagi.
