A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Solomon Islands on 9 December 2016. A tsunami warning message was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre for Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and French Polynesia but the threat has now passed. There have been no reports of damaging waves in Honiara. Some earthquake damage has been reported on Makira Island in Solomon Islands. Honiara is operating business as usual.
