News:
The number of diplomatic missions - Embassies, or High Commissions in the case of Commonwealth countries - in Wellington has steadily grown in recent years, with Vanuatu, Saudi Arabia and Ireland establishing missions in Wellington over the last 18 months.
An embassy or high commission is a substantial investment in a partner government’s relationship with New Zealand, enabling more direct contact between governments, local consular support to overseas citizens, and more effective promotion of trade and investment. It also contributes to the cultural and economic life of the capital.
Beyond the 50 diplomatic missions resident in New Zealand, another 97 are cross-accredited to New Zealand but are based in other capitals, particularly Canberra.
In addition, there are 120 consular posts in New Zealand, which focus on consular support to their citizens and companies.
