Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta had a warm and productive conversation with her new UK counterpart Foreign Secretary Liz Truss yesterday evening.

Ministers noted the enduring partnership between the UK and Aotearoa New Zealand, based on our shared values, strong people-to-people links, historical ties, and the close alignment of our foreign policy goals. They discussed the opportunity to work more closely together in the Indo-Pacific, including to strengthen Pacific resilience. Ministers expressed concern about the situation in Afghanistan, and discussed the continuing effort to assist citizens, permanent residents and visa holders to leave the country.

Ministers expressed their commitment to addressing climate change and ensuring the success of COP26 next month. They also welcomed recent progress towards the conclusion of a high quality, comprehensive and inclusive NZ-UK Free Trade Agreement.
