The third annual New Zealand-China Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Change was hosted virtually by New Zealand on Wednesday night between Minister for Climate Change James Shaw and Chinese Minister for Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu.
The dialogue was focused on domestic and international policy on climate change, as well as potential areas of bilateral cooperation.Topics of discussion included the upcoming COP26 in Glasgow, the WTO 12th Ministerial Conference, and New Zealand’s APEC host year. The two ministers also had a productive exchange on respective ETS policies and forward planning.
China is an important partner and global leader in climate change issues. The dialogue was an opportunity for New Zealand to acknowledge this and register our continued interest in working together with China, consistent with the New Zealand-China leaders’ statement on climate change, adopted by Prime Minister Ardern and Premier Li Keqiang in 2019.
