Getting married in New Zealand
If you do not live in New Zealand you should firstly check with the authorities in the place you normally live to see if there are any special steps you must take or rules that apply to you when you marry in New Zealand.
You will require a German Passport with at least 6 months validity. If you have been married before, then a translated copy of divorce papers is required.
Anybody can marry in New Zealand as long as they are legally free to marry. Under New Zealand law this means that
- They are not already married (or if they have been married, the marriage has been dissolved by a court of law).
- If you have been married before then you need to produce translated evidence that the marriage has been dissolved. If your previous spouse has died, then you will have to give the date of death on the Notice of Intended Marriage.
- They are old enough to marry (16 or over, although parental consent is required if either party is younger than 20 years old).
- They are not closely related by blood, marriage or adoption. Details of these prohibited marriages appear on the form Notice of Intent to Marriage BDM58.

You will need to decide when and where you will marry. You need these details to complete your application for a Marriage Licence.
Choose a Marriage Celebrant
You will need to contact a Registrar of Marriages in New Zealand for a list of approved marriage celebrants.
Get a Marriage Licence
From outside New Zealand complete a BDM 58 form (this can only be witnessed at the New Zealand Embassy in Berlin, and there is a fee for this service. Please contact the Embassy). Alternatively, this can be done one week prior to the marriage taking place at the local registry office in New Zealand. This form must be done in person and faxed copies to the Marriage Registrar are not accepted, as the party must sign a Statutory Declaration.
