45th session Human Rights Council interactive dialogue on the reports of the Group of Experts on Yemen

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

45th session Human Rights Council - interactive dialogue on the reports of the Group of Experts on Yemen, delivered by Charlotte Darlow, New Zealand Delegation, Geneva, Switzerland

Madame President

New Zealand would like to thank the Group of Experts for their most recent report on Yemen.

New Zealand remains deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict in Yemen and the grave human rights situation.

We urge all parties to abide by their obligations under international law, to refrain from indiscriminate attacks on medical facilities, and to allow rapid, safe and unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief and personnel.

We are disturbed by reports of torture, sexual violence against women, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and the recruitment of child soldiers. It is critical that all parties break the cycle of violence and abuse against women and children.

New Zealand urges all parties to promptly reach a comprehensive agreement to cease hostilities and welcomes the tireless efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, to find a political solution. We endorse the Group’s recommendation that any peace process should be inclusive of women, youth and religious minority communities, including adherents to the Baha’i faith.

Question: We would be interested in understanding from the Group of Experts what steps need to be taken to better protect women and children in Yemen from sexual and gender based violence.

Thank you, Madame President
