Human Rights Council: 45th session of the Universal Periodic Review, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Mr President,

New Zealand recognises Saudi Arabia’s ongoing work to advance women’s rights under Vision2030, and the progress made towards gender economic empowerment.

New Zealand recommends that Saudi Arabia:

1. Conduct a review of domestic legislation against compliance with CEDAW obligations;

Review the definition of terrorism in line with international standards, including through the amendment of anti-cybercrime and counterterrorism legislation to ensure the use of social media for peaceful expression is not criminalised;

Place an absolute ban on death sentences, including immediately against persons below the age of 18 at the time when the offence was committed; and,.

Ratify the ICCPR and the ICESCR.
