What is the UPR?
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a five-yearly review by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva that assesses the progress of all UN Member States on a broad range of human rights issues.
New Zealand's participation in the UPR provides an opportunity to demonstrate New Zealand’s strong commitment to the global rules-based system, including existing international human rights mechanisms.
Further information about the UPR process is available from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights(external link).
New Zealand's 4th UPR (2024)
New Zealand's 4th Universal Periodic Review took place at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on 29 April 2024.
You can find the documentation for New Zealand’s 4th UPR on the Human Rights Council website(external link). This includes New Zealand’s national report, a summary of information submitted and the recommendations.
New Zealand has accepted the majority of the recommendations made in the 4th UPR. New Zealand has also launched an online tool to track progress with implementation of the recommendations – the Human Rights Monitor(external link).
