Our relationship with Thailand
New Zealand has a long-standing and warm relationship with Thailand with diplomatic relations dating back to 1956.
The relationship is broad, encompassing bilateral political, security, and trade and economic links, a range of regional issues of common interest, and international issues such as disarmament and climate change.
New Zealand and Thailand have announced our shared intention to uplift the bilateral relationship to a ‘Strategic Partnership’ by 2026 to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Trade and investment
Thailand is a consistent top ten two-way trading partner for New Zealand.
We have a free trade agreement with Thailand, concluded in 2005:
We have regional free trade agreements that include Thailand:
- ASEAN-Australia-NZ FTA - AANZFTA
