How the Consulate-General can help
The Consulate-General can assist New Zealand citizens in Hong Kong in a variety of ways. The Consulate-General provides notarial services, passport services and consular services for New Zealanders in distress. We can refer you to relevant Hong Kong Government agencies and attempt to answer any relevant questions.
The Consulate-General, by regulation, cannot enter any case; conduct any investigation; or act as mediators or recommend lawyers in any personal professional conflicts experienced by New Zealand citizens. The Consulate-General cannot investigate, certify, or vouch for employers. It is up to each individual to evaluate any potential employer before signing a contract. Prospective teachers are urged to deal directly with the schools or institutes. The Labour Department of the Hong Kong SAR Government provides an online Interactive Employment Service(external link) for job-seekers, and the “Youth Employment Start(external link)” e-Portal for young people.

Alternatively, please directly contact the Native-speaking English Teacher Section of the Education Department (contact details below) for vacancies in the Native English Teachers Scheme (NET) operated by the Education Department. Some expatriate teachers who are currently teaching at local government schools in Hong Kong on the NET scheme have set up the Native English Speaking Teachers’ Association (NESTA)(external link). This association serves a number of NET teachers (mainly Secondary teachers) in Hong Kong. NESTA's website(external link) provides information on teaching and living in Hong Kong as an expatriate teacher, FAQs, news on social events for teachers, etc.
The Primary Native English Teacher (PNET) website(external link) serves mainly Primary NET teachers, some of whom are New Zealanders. The PNET site enables NET teachers to share information and access resources online. Its Guest section allows anyone to post and pass on information or make requests for assistance.
There are some other opportunities to teach English as a foreign language at institutions other than local schools. The British Council recruits English teachers with specific teaching qualifications and experience for its various courses for non-English speaking students.
