Public Diplomacy and Policy Adviser

We are looking for a Public Diplomacy and Policy Adviser.

  • Plan, develop and deliver the New Zealand High Commission’s public diplomacy; 
  • Build the Tonga-New Zealand relationship; 
  • Provide policy advice and insights on Tonga; and 
  • We’re looking for an excellent communicator and influencer who can deliver results. 

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role   

The Public Diplomacy and Policy Adviser is responsible for building connections between New Zealand and Tonga, and providing insights into Tonga for the NZHC. You will manage the High Commission’s public communications, events and stakeholder engagement. You will also provide a local lens of key issues, trends, and events that are of interest to New Zealand.  

In this role you will have the autonomy to drive public diplomacy initiatives. If you are creative and looking to build on an already strong network of contacts, have excellent judgement and can work independently, you will thrive in this role. Ideally you will also be social media-savvy, and be able to propose innovative ways for the High Commission to engage with the public.
The role works as part of a small team delivering the High Commission’s public diplomacy strategy, providing advice on policy issues, and promoting New Zealand’s interest in Tonga.  

The appointment range for this role is TOP $38,445 to $44,212 – negotiable depending on experience.

  • Sound understanding of digital technologies and their capabilities for public diplomacy; 
  • Strong existing network of contacts with stakeholders;
  • An understanding of Tonga policy, politics and context;
  • Strong organisational skills are essential;
  • Creative flair and an eye for detail; and 
  • Flexibility and ability to cope under pressure.
