Mr Vitalis will perform this role as part of his responsibilities as the head of Trade and Economic Group, reflecting the close alignment between MFAT's policy priorities in APEC and the wider New Zealand trade policy agenda.
The SOM Chair is appointed by the host economy to facilitate the preparation of the APEC policy agenda and coordinate the work of the Senior Officials. As hosts in 2021, New Zealand will chair the APEC Senior Officials Meetings.
As SOM Chair, Mr Vitalis will work closely with other senior APEC New Zealand roles to advise the New Zealand government on hosting and policy priorities and progress towards their achievement, and to support the Prime Minister and Ministers in their chairing of meetings and engagement with counterparts.
