Minister for Trade and Export Growth David Parker's call with Japan’s Minister for Economic Revitalisation and CPTPP Yasutoshi Nishimura - Readout, 22 June 2020

News:

Minister for Trade and Export Growth David Parker spoke by telephone on 22 June with Japan’s Minister in charge of Economic Revitalisation and CPTPP, Yasutoshi Nishimura.

The two Ministers exchanged views on the current international trade situation and ways in which CPTPP can contribute to post Coronavirus trade and economic recovery.

They agreed to work together in three key areas:

  • underlining the importance of an open, rules-based, trading system, including the particular value of the CPTPP and its expansion over time, in the global economic recovery;
  • pursuing practical steps to support trade recovery and the evolution of the global economy, in areas such as supply chain resilience, including in essential products and fuller use of digitalisation;
  • jointly supporting this year’s Chair, Mexico, in the success of the Third CPTPP Commission meeting planned for August.

The two Ministers agreed that officials should undertake further discussions on ways to advance the priorities above towards the upcoming Commission meeting.
