Climate change

Responding to the climate challenge

Climate change is one of the gravest threats to New Zealand’s security and prosperity, and ultimately our wellbeing. We have three priorities in addressing this challenge.
  • Supporting New Zealand’s transition

The global transition to a low emissions economy is under way; there are new market opportunities for countries that offer climate solutions, and emerging trade barriers for countries that lag on climate action.

  • Working with the world

Reducing the impacts of climate change on New Zealand and New Zealanders requires reducing global emissions. The Paris Agreement is the agreed framework for global climate action.

  • New Zealand's climate action in our region

Working with our neighbours: We support climate action in our region, with priority on a resilient Pacific.
