Our relationship with Portugal
New Zealand has a friendly bilateral relationship with Portugal, which has been enhanced in recent years through shared peacekeeping work in Timor-Leste. We share a commitment to support Timor-Leste's reconstruction and development.
The Portuguese were among the first immigrants to New Zealand in the 19th and 20th centuries. Around 1,000 Portuguese travellers visit New Zealand each year.

As Portugal is a European Union member state, the EU-NZ FTA will apply to trade between Portugal and New Zealand following ratification and entry into force.

- June 2022: Hon David Parker, Minister for Oceans and Fisheries to attend the United Nations Ocean Conference.
- September 2007: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rt Hon Winston Peters, visited Portugal and met the Portuguese Foreign Minister Luís Amado.
Portugal to New Zealand
- July 2023: Prime Minister Antonio Costa visited Dunedin to attend Portugal’s first match at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
