New Zealand and China hold Foreign Affairs Consultations

News:

On 17 December 2024, Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade Bede Corry met with his Chinese counterpart Executive Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu in Wellington for the fifth round of New Zealand-China Foreign Affairs Consultations.

“The consultations, which took place on the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the New Zealand-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, enabled us to canvass the breadth of our bilateral relationship with China, including areas of cooperation, and issues where our views differ,” said Bede Corry.

The talks recognised the significant engagements that have occurred over the course of this year, including visits to New Zealand by Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Premier Li Qiang, and progress made across the bilateral relationship, including in trade, people to people links, and cooperation on climate change and the environment.

New Zealand raised concerns over the human rights situation in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong, and emphasised the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea.

Secretary Corry and Vice Minister Ma also had an in-depth exchange of views on regional and international issues, including the Pacific, Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, and North Korea.
