Stories from across the moana

Across the Pacific, communities are grappling with the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels eat away at shorelines, natural habitats are threatened, food and clean water is harder to access, and extreme weather damages infrastructure and leaves villages isolated.

Climate Finance provided by New Zealand is supporting a number of partnerships and programmes that work with our Pacific neighbours to find solutions - often nature-based – to the crisis. Our series of videos showcase initiatives, from mangrove rehabilitation to solar power generation, that are building resilience and hope for the future.

Replanting mangroves, restoring balance

Founded in 2016, the IUCN’s Kiwa Initiative(external link) recognises that natural ecosystems and biodiversity are critical to sustainable action on climate change. In this video, residents of Raviravi village in Vanua Levu, Fiji explain how a shoreline mangrove planting scheme is addressing soil erosion, rehabilitating native species and restoring balance in the ecosystem.

A safe and secure way across the water

When a tropical cyclone destroyed their footbridge, the people of Tavuya lost their main means of travelling from their remote location. See how a new bridge – built with a risk-informed development approach from UNDP’s ‘Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific(external link)’ project – is giving local residents safe, affordable access to resources and schools.

Micro insurance for farmers

Innovative climate disaster risk financing and insurance is helping communities be financially prepared and rebuild more quickly after a severe weather event. The United Nations Pacific Insurance and Climate Adaptation Programme(external link) is implementing the scheme, supported by New Zealand. Hear how it is bringing peace of mind to Fiji’s cane and cassava farmers, enabling them to become more climate-resilient.

Indigenous, nature-based solutions

A grassroots-led approach to climate challenges is enabling  rural communities in Fiji to collectively plan for a climate resilient future. The Climate Resilient Islands (CRI) programme(external link) – funded by New Zealand and implemented by environmental education organisation Live & Learn –  provides grant-funding for activities that improve food security, reduce disaster risk and restore ecosystems. The programme is also operating in five other Pacific countries. Watch to learn how drawing on traditional knowledge and naturebased solutions is helping to build resilient communities in Fiji.

Water security

Climate change is increasing water supply risks for Tongan communities who rely on rainwater and fragile groundwater. Since 2022, a New Zealand hassupported the National Water Tank project which has been building water management resilience for households and communities. Hear from members of local communities about how the project is strengthening their water security.

Protective planting to fight climate change

Watch how Tongan communities are fighting climate change by planting native, fruit and coastal plants, with funding by the first national fund in the Pacific region specifically for climate change. This sustainable financing mechanism enables Tonga to both access large-scale international climate finance, and deliver adaption initiatives at the community level. New Zealand is one of the international partners supporting the Government of Tonga’s priorities in its Climate Change Fund to build a more resilient Tonga.

Guardians of the Pacific’s plant biodiversity

At the Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePaCT) in Suva, a female-led team of scientists are safeguarding the region’s plant genetic resources. In 2022 New Zealand allocated $10 million to the Centre – which conserves over 2400 crop and tree varieties – to scale up its vital work. Read more about CePaCT’s game-changing research(external link) into new climate resilient varieties of crops that are resistant to drought, pests and diseases, and the far-reaching impacts of their work throughout the Pacific.
