Ministry Statements & Speeches:
Mr President,
New Zealand thanks the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan for his comprehensive report. We welcome the opportunity to engage on this critical situation.
New Zealand continues to be gravely concerned and deeply dismayed by the systematic regression of fundamental human rights in Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls.
Half of Afghan society remains severely repressed and compromised by multiple restrictions. This perpetuates widespread and institutionalized discrimination against women and girls in all areas of life. We are disturbed that women and girls in Afghanistan have been arbitrarily and violently detained for alleged violations of the Taliban’s dress code. This systemic repression is unacceptable.
New Zealand calls on the Taliban leadership to restore access by all Afghans to their fundamental human rights, and to abide by its obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law.
New Zealand continues to stand with the brave people of Afghanistan, especially Afghan women and girls. We strongly support the mandate of the Special Rapporteur, especially his critical work in ensuring accountability for human rights violations and abuses.
Thank you.
