Our relationship with Belarus

New Zealand suspended all high-level bilateral political (ministerial), and defence and military engagement with Belarus in 2021. New Zealand also imposed travel bans on selected individuals associated with the Lukashenko regime, following ongoing concerns about election fraud and human rights abuses after the 2020 Belarus elections.

New Zealand actively encourages Belarus to work constructively with the international community, to ensure that universal human rights such as freedom of expression, the right to peaceful demonstration, and the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections are upheld.
