Our relationship with French Polynesia

French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France located in the south-east of the Pacific.  French Polynesia has autonomy in some domestic areas, while France retains jurisdiction over law and order, security, defence, finance and most foreign affairs.

French Polynesia became a full member of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) in 2016 and is represented at regional forums such as the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC).

New Zealand and French Polynesia have close cultural and people-to-people links. Māori are thought to have set out from French Polynesia’s Raiatea Island on their voyage to New Zealand hundreds of years ago. The French Polynesian languages and Te Reo Māori are also closely related.

New Zealand and French Polynesia’s bilateral relationship is underpinned by the Joint Cooperation Plan [PDF, 1.9 MB], signed in 2018.

Trade and investment

French Polynesia is New Zealand’s third highest value Pacific market for goods exports. New Zealand is the territory’s second biggest supplier of food products and fifth largest supplier of goods overall. Key New Zealand exports include meat, dairy and petroleum products. New Zealand is also French Polynesia’s third largest source of tourism.

The latest information about New Zealand's trade profile with French Polynesia is available on the New Zealand Trade Dashboard.

Development cooperation and sustainability

New Zealand does not provide official development assistance to French Polynesia due to its status as a high-income economy. However, as a Pacific neighbour, New Zealand still plays a role in development. Our Consulate-General (which is based in Noumea and represents New Zealand throughout the French Pacific Territories) administers a small fund for Short-Term Training Scholarships and New Zealand and France often work together through the France, Australia, New Zealand (FRANZ) arrangement in maritime surveillance and emergency and disaster relief.
