Trevor Mallard

Trevor Mallard was appointed New Zealand’s Ambassador Designate to Ireland in 2023.

Trevor was a Member of New Zealand Parliament from 1984 through 1990, and again from 1993 through 2022. His roles in Parliament included Minister of Education, State Services, Sport, Associate Minister of Finance, Minister of Energy, for the Environment, Economic Development, Coordinating Race Relations and as Speaker New Zealand House of Representatives.

During Trevor's time as Speaker, there was considerable modernisation of the Standing Orders to improve use of technology, executive accountability and to make parliament more family friendly.

Trevor used to play rugby including for the parliamentary rugby team, he never developed a sidestep and is now a keen spectator, has a professional cycling license and enjoys walking his Australian Shepherds Jeeves and Violet.

He is married to political columnist and author Jane Clifton and has three children from a previous marriage. Trevor has seven grandchildren, four born in Ireland and three currently reside in Galway.
