New Zealand's climate action in our region

New Zealand is committed to supporting climate change action in developing countries.

The International Development Cooperation (IDC) Programme(external link) delivers New Zealand’s official support for developing countries, with a particular focus on the Pacific Islands region.

The focus for our climate development work in the region is on building Pacific resilience to the impacts of climate change, through our climate finance and through helping draw our Pacific neighbours' priorities and concerns to the attention of the international community.

You can see more about the wider context of our support for other countries' climate change responses, including our climate finance, under Climate change support.

Our climate commitments

In October 2021 New Zealand committed to spend NZ $1.3 billion in grant-based climate finance between 2022 and 2025. This underlines the importance New Zealand attaches to global and regional efforts to work together to combat climate change.

At least half of this climate finance commitment will support Pacific Island countries and at least 50 percent will target adaptation, a key priority for the Pacific. See stories and information about our partnerships under Climate change support.

Our new commitment builds on earlier climate finance, including the 2019–2022 commitment announced by Prime Minister Ardern at the United Nations General Assembly in 2018.

That commitment of NZ$300 million has been delivered through the International Development Cooperation (IDC) programme, half of that ($150 million) through a dedicated Climate Change Programme (operating until June 2023).

For illustrations of our climate change support in practice, see the Climate Change Programme case studies.

This includes the support we provide to amplify Pacific voices. As a larger Pacific country, Aotearoa New Zealand also supports efforts to ensure voices from small island developing states in our region are heard in the world on climate change issues.
