Our Relationship with Nepal
New Zealand’s relationship with Nepal is warm and friendly. A key event connecting our two countries was the ascent of Mt Everest in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
The New Zealand Government makes annual contributions to the Himalayan Trust and continues to play a role in celebrating important events. The Government also established the Sir Edmund Hillary Fellowship in 2008 to facilitate visits to New Zealand by young leaders from Nepal and India.
Trade
Information about New Zealand's trade with Nepal is available on the New Zealand Trade Dashboard(external link).
Aid
Since 1994, New Zealand has provided around NZ$30 million in development assistance in areas such as education, capacity building, and agriculture.
Currently, New Zealand is funding the strengthening of local education systems in the Everest region of Nepal, by providing teacher training, scholarships, improved school facilities and better coordination with local education authorities.
New Zealand has also supported scholarships for Nepal since the first scholars arrived in New Zealand in the mid-1950s, under the Colombo Plan.
