Our relationship with Iceland

New Zealand and Iceland have a warm relationship, and often work together in multilateral organisations like the UN and the WTO. New Zealand and Iceland established diplomatic relations in 1988.

Iceland is a world leader in geothermal technology, energy efficiency and fish processing technology. There are many opportunities for New Zealand and Iceland to deepen our trade relationship in these areas.

New Zealand and Iceland are both members of Wellbeing Economy Governments, a collaboration of governments interested in sharing expertise and transferrable policy practice to advance shared ambition of building wellbeing economics.

New Zealand and Iceland are both founding members and signatories of the Agreement on Climate Change, Trade and Sustainability, agreed in 2024.
