Our relationship with Ukraine
New Zealand and Ukraine have a cordial relationship, with a good range of bilateral contact having occurred during accreditation visits from Warsaw and in multilateral forums such as the United Nations. We have many converging interests, in areas such as international peace and security.
Although bilateral trade with Ukraine is currently limited, there is significant potential for developing trade and economic relations, particularly in the areas of agriculture and information technology.
New Zealand has a small Ukrainian community which dates back to 1949, when approximately 170 Ukrainian refugees arrived in New Zealand following the end of World War II. According to the 2018 census, there are 1,941 people born in Ukraine usually resident in New Zealand. There are a small number of Ukrainian community groups in New Zealand, including Mahi for Ukraine, the Ukrainian Association of New Zealand, and the Ukrainian Gromada of Wellington.
