Mr President,
New Zealand thanks the High Commissioner for her update on the situation in Myanmar.
New Zealand is a strong supporter of international justice and accountability. We welcome the on-going work of the Human Rights Council and the Independent Investigative Monitoring Mechanism for Myanmar. We also acknowledge the provisional measures of the International Court of Justice.
Myanmar must take measures towards the protection of minorities and cooperate fully with all UN and international accountability mechanisms.
New Zealand remains deeply concerned about the plight of Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar. We are deeply concerned that the coup has exacerbated the humanitarian situation of the most vulnerable.
New Zealand continues to condemn the coup and on-going violence against civilians. We call for the regime to fully implement commitments made under the Five Point Consensus including the end to violence and a fully inclusive dialogue between parties. We further call for the release of political prisoners and the return to civilian rule.
New Zealand strongly opposes the death penalty in all cases and under all circumstances. We are gravely concerned by reports that Myanmar plans to execute prisoners. We call for the formal abolition of the death penalty in Myanmar.
Madame High Commissioner, we would welcome your views on what the international community can do to promote accountability mechanisms in Myanmar.
We welcome the continued attention of the Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in Myanmar.
