Human Rights Council: 46th Session of the Universal Periodic Review, Chile

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Delivered by Permanent Representative Lucy Duncan.

Madame Vice-President

New Zealand warmly welcomes the delegation from the Republic of Chile.

We welcome Chile’s enactment of new legislation to eliminate violence against women and girls, and we welcome Chile’s second National Human Rights Plan for 2022-2025.

New Zealand recommends that Chile:

  1. Ensure all women’s and girls’ full access to sexual and reproductive health services including safe and legal abortion services without delays or barriers;
  2. Strengthen measures to recognise and advance the rights of Indigenous Peoples, including in relation to the application of the Anti-Terrorism Law to Indigenous land activists;
  3. Improve protections for people with disabilities including intellectual and psychosocial disabilities, ensuring their access to health services, legal rights, and freedom from discrimination; and
  4. Remove the death penalty as a punishment from the Military Justice Code.

We thank the delegation for their participation today and wish them a successful review.

Thank you Mr President.
