Aotearoa New Zealand contributes $23.5 million to the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) eighth replenishment

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Aotearoa New Zealand contributes $23.5 million to the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) eighth replenishment

This contribution was announced by Aotearoa New Zealand’s Head of Delegation to the GEF, Ms. Renée Yap, during online meetings on 7-8 April 2022.

Aotearoa New Zealand’s contribution to the eighth replenishment of the GEF is almost double the contribution to the seventh replenishment. This increase reflects the urgent need for collective global action on biodiversity loss and climate.

Aotearoa New Zealand has contributed to the GEF since its establishment in 1994. It is the largest multilateral fund providing finance for developing countries to invest in initiatives to improve global environmental outcomes. The GEF mobilises funding to provide support and expertise at a scale that Aotearoa New Zealand alone would not be able to achieve.

In the process towards the eighth replenishment, Aotearoa New Zealand has supported a greater focus by the GEF on meeting the needs of small island developing states and the least developed countries.
