Emissions tracking

The Ministry has started measuring emissions from specific development cooperation activities to better understand the extent of emissions generated through these activities.

We are working with suppliers and contractors to ensure that we have the necessary information for accurate measurement.

MFAT’s emissions reporting

The Ministry measures its operational emissions and reports on them annually, making this information publicly available in line with ISO 14064-1:2018. Systems are now in place for the Ministry to include IDC emissions alongside its organisational emissions.

Who is affected?

The initial focus for tracking of IDC emissions is on Contracts for Services (CfS) with a total value of more than NZ$500,000 and starting on or after 1 January 2025.

What information to provide

Suppliers and contractors with a CfS that meets the above criteria will need to provide activity or financial information on fuels (e.g., vehicle and generator fuels), electricity if on-charged to the Ministry, travel (e.g., flights, taxis, rental vehicles, etc.), and freight. In general, suppliers and contractors are expected to include this information on invoices provided to MFAT.

When to provide information

Information must be provided at a minimum once per year in early July (i.e. after the end of the Ministry’s financial year).
