Our relationship with Spain

New Zealand and Spain share a warm bilateral relationship, built on our shared values of democracy, equitable global health outcomes, commitment to multi-lateral fora, human rights, gender, international peace and security, and the environment. 2027 will be the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

There is regular contact between our leaders, Foreign Ministers and ministries, focused in particular on our Global Values Partnership(external link). New Zealand and Spain successfully campaigned for non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council in the Western European and Others Group for 2015-2016, and we share an interest in contributing to a Security Council that is more open, effective, and transparent.

Trade and investment

Spain is the fourth largest European Union economy and the world’s 14th largest economy. New Zealand primary sector, manufacturing and services companies have a history of operations in Spain, and new opportunities are being explored, including in the health, agribusiness, marine and tourism sectors.

In July 2023, New Zealand and the EU signed a high-quality, comprehensive, and progressive Free Trade Agreement which entered into force in May 2024. As a European Union member state, Spain is party to the EU-NZ FTA. The FTA contains world-leading commitments on sustainable and inclusive trade.

The latest information about New Zealand's trade profile with Spain is available on the New Zealand Trade Dashboard(external link).
