On 14 June 2023, officials from Aotearoa New Zealand and Japan held disarmament and non-proliferation talks. Agreement to hold a disarmament dialogue was announced by the Foreign Ministers of Japan and New Zealand during Minister Mahuta’s visit to Japan in February 2023. Nuclear disarmament and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Chemical Weapons Convention, the International Atomic Energy Agency, autonomous weapons systems, and export controls were among the topics discussed during the virtual talks.
