Madam President,
New Zealand is deeply concerned with the human rights situation in Sudan. The military takeover on 25 October undermines the hard won political and civil rights of the Sudanese people.
New Zealand condemns the military takeover and calls for the immediate return of the civilian-led transitional government headed by Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdock. Reinstatement of a civilian government is pivotal to Sudan continuing its democratic transition.
Like others, we are concerned about the efforts to prevent civilian political activity in Sudan through the detention of Sudanese Government officials, reports of killing of peaceful protesters by the Sudanese military, and restrictions on access to the internet.
The arbitrary detention of civilians by the Sudanese military is a breach of human rights that threatens Sudan’s progress, stability, and future. The Sudanese military must immediately release all Government officials and other civilians that have been unlawfully detained. The Sudanese military must also exercise the utmost restraint during protests and lift internet restrictions to ensure the people of Sudan have access to information.
Human rights and fundamental freedoms in Sudan must be protected and promoted, including the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.
