Climate change is a grave threat to global security, prosperity, and well-being. Extreme weather events are becoming more common, while ocean changes threaten those who live close to the sea. Increased heatwaves, storms, droughts and floods, and rising sea levels affect us all.
Millions of the world’s most vulnerable are exposed to acute shortages of food and water, loss of homes and livelihoods. Across the Pacific, communities are grappling with the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels eat away at shorelines, natural habitats are threatened, food and clean water is harder to access, and extreme weather damages infrastructure and leaves villages isolated.
As part of our international action on climate change, New Zealand committed $1.3bn in grant-based climate finance between 2022 and 2025 to support other countries’ efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. We are doing this alongside other countries around the world. It is part of our commitment under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
New Zealand’s Climate Finance is contributing towards a global solution reduce the impacts of climate change, build resilience, and support those who are bearing the brunt of the crisis.
Recognising the impact of climate change on the Pacific region, our ambition is that all Pacific peoples remain resilient to the impacts of climate change and other disasters and that New Zealand can support building resilience in practical ways. More than half of our commitment is therefore supporting Pacific countries, and more than half is supporting countries to adapt to climate change. New Zealand also provides significant funding to support countries in Southeast Asia to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change impacts.

Our wider international response to climate change
New Zealand's works on climate change at a global, regional, and national level. For information about how we work with the world to reduce emissions and transition New Zealand to a low emissions economy, see Climate Change.
