New Zealand’s support for Vanuatu
Vanuatu is part of our Pacific family and New Zealand's thoughts are with everyone affected by the earthquake. New Zealand is providing emergency humanitarian assistance(external link) to the Government of Vanuatu's response.
A wide range of New Zealand agencies have been on the ground as part of the immediate humanitarian response to the event. New Zealand has provided $3.85 million in support to Vanuatu, which has included:
- Emergency relief supplies, including family hygiene kits, mother and infant kits, shelter tool kits, tarpaulins, generators and water purification kits
- New Zealand Defence Force surveillance flights to help assess damage
- A Fire and Emergency New Zealand urban search and rescue team
- A forward planning medical assistance team
- A psychosocial support team
- Structural engineers
- Deployment of New Zealand Red Cross personnel
- A $250,000 contribution to the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) Vanuatu appeal
- A New Zealand Disaster Response Partnership (NZDRP) funding round, for NGOs providing humanitarian assistance in response to the earthquake.
We are actively considering further geotechnical assistance, and continue to work closely with our partners, including Australia and France, to provide help as requested by the Government of Vanuatu.
The New Zealand Government has repatriated 173 people from Vanuatu, including 60 foreign nationals from 19 countries. Fifty-six of the first responders who were deployed in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake have also returned to New Zealand.
