Ministry Statements & Speeches:
Chair, Excellencies, distinguished delegates
On behalf of the New Zealand Government, I am proud to reaffirm our strong and enduring commitment to universal human rights and the international human rights system. A system that we all committed to 75 years ago.
Accountability is a key element in the protection and promotion of human rights, both at the international and at the national level.
New Zealand’s pledge therefore focusses on strengthening our national mechanism for reporting and follow up for international human rights processes.
We pledge to launch an online, public facing human rights monitoring tool in 2024, which will record UN treaty body and UPR recommendations issued to New Zealand, and track our actions in implementing these recommendations.
Excellencies, 75 years ago we all came together to recognise the fundamental rights and the equal value of every person. The principle that human rights are universal and indivisible is just as important today as it was then, and it is incumbent on all of us, every government, to hold ourselves and each other accountable for our human rights obligations.
I thank you.
