Human Rights Council: 44th Session of the Universal Periodic Review - Canada, 2023

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Mr President,

New Zealand warmly welcomes the delegation of Canada.

New Zealand commends Canada for banning conversion therapy in Canada’s Criminal Code, and launching its first Action Plan to build a more inclusive future for 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

New Zealand recommends that Canada:

  1. Continue to take steps to ensure that persons with disabilities are lifted out of poverty, including by ensuring that the 2023 Canada Disability Benefit Act takes into account the higher disability related living expenses of persons with disabilities.
  2. Continue efforts to address deep-set inequalities facing Indigenous Peoples including implementing the recommendations made by the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples and implementing the 94 Calls to Action issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
  3. Ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Thank you Mr President.
