United Nations General Assembly: Third Committee - Statement on Myanmar

Ministry Statements & Speeches:

Delivered by Deputy Permanent Representative, Mr. Justin Fepuleai

Chair,

New Zealand remains deeply concerned about the human rights situation in Myanmar.

New Zealand strongly condemns the coup in Myanmar and the ongoing violence against civilians.

We continue to call for the immediate end to violence, the return to civilian rule and the release of all political prisoners.

New Zealand further notes our strong opposition to the death penalty and condemns the execution of prisoners in Myanmar earlier this year.

Further, New Zealand remains deeply concerned about the plight of Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar.

We are deeply concerned that the coup has exacerbated the humanitarian situation of the most vulnerable.

We support accountability measures and acknowledge the ongoing work of the Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar and the International Court of Justice

New Zealand calls for Myanmar to take measures towards the protection of human rights for all, including minority groups and to cooperate fully with all relevant UN agencies and representatives.

New Zealand reiterates our ongoing support to ASEAN and the Five Point Consensus.

We call on Myanmar’s military regime to fully implement commitments under the Five Point Consensus including the end to violence and a fully inclusive dialogue between parties.

Thank you.
