Pasifika New Zealand

Find out how the agreement strengthens connections between Pasifika New Zealand and the Pacific region.

Our Pacific community

New Zealand is home to 381,642 Pasifika peoples and more than 8 percent of our population identify as being of Pacific origin. Over 300,000 Pacific people live in Auckland city, earning its name as the Polynesian capital of the world. While migration laid the foundation of Pacific settlement in New Zealand, now more than 60 percent of our Pacific population are born here. Cook Islanders, Niueans and Tokelauans share New Zealand citizenship.

Pasifika New Zealand is a source of talent, expertise, and innovation across many sectors. As our youngest and fastest growing population (nearly half are under 20 years old), Pasifika achievements will increasingly shape New Zealand’s future, help define what it means to be a New Zealander and reinforce New Zealand’s global identity as a Pacific nation.

Lifting the Pacific economy

Through PACER Plus, we are committed to creating opportunities and supporting Pacific businesses to grow the Pacific economy, both in New Zealand and in Pacific Island countries. Pasifika New Zealand provides a valuable connection into Pacific economies and communities, to advance business to business activities, and establish pathways for goods and services exports.

PACER Plus will open more opportunities for trade throughout the Pacific region. Pacific Island countries represent a diversified market for New Zealand exports, including manufactured products. New Zealand is also an important market for Pacific goods, and increased trade will enable New Zealanders, including our Pacific community, to experience more Pacific products.
